Death Claims Another One of Waverly's Old Citizens.
John Allen Crain was born in Fleming county, Kentucky, November the 5th 1822 and died at Waverly, Illinois December the twelfth, 1902.
He had outlived, by several years, a large family of brothers and sisters. His father Samuel Crain, was of Puritan stock and served as a soldier in the American Revolution under Gen. Washington. His mother's name was Jane Moffett. He came to Waverly, in his early manhood in the year 1846 and established a mercantile business from which he retired in 1895.
He was married in 1848 to Elizabeth Manson who died in 1854. In 1856 he was married to Eleanor Kennedy, who was taken from him by death in 1893. He was the father of twelve children, five of whom with thirteen grandchildren four great grand children survive him.
He became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church in 1838 and was devoted to it to the hour of his death.
After a short illness he died peacefully.
"Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams."
The funeral services were held in this city last Sunday morning Dec. 14 from the home of his daughter Mrs. N. B. Rohrer and the services were conducted by Rev. T. B. Smith of the M. E. church assisted by Rev. Stowell of the Episcopal church. Quite a number of friends and relatives were present to pay their last respects to their departed friend. Those present from a distance were Mesdames Kate Batty and Maude Bennett of Chicago (daughters) Mrs. C. C. Terry, of Girard, Ill. ( a grand daughter) and Mrs. J. E. Hutchinson of Bloomington, Ill.
Interment was made in East cemetery.
