Martha Ann Long Was The Wife Of John Henry McCallie And The Mother Of William Theodore / James Charles / Thaddeus Lincoln / Maud Mitchell / Mary Sue / Alice Annie / Ross Denton / John Roy / George Washington McCallie.

John Henry married Martha on Saturday May 02, 1868 One Mile East Of Charleston, Tennessee, By Rev. Jack M. Miller.

During the first year of marriage, John Henry and Martha Ann McCallie moved to Carrolton, Carrol County, Arkansas as their first child William Theodore was born there in 1869, Also James & Thaddeus & Maude & Mary & Alice were also born in Carroll County, While Ross & George was born in Harrison Boone County, Arkansas and John Roy was born in Taney County, Missouri.

Sometime after 1888, the family moved to the chickasaw Nation in Indian Territory near Ardmore. John taught school for a time and was one of the guards for the first Federal jail in Ardmore when it was only a stockade. He worked under United States Marshall John S. Hammer, and for a while William and Thaddeus McCallie, his sons, were deputies or posse-man under Marshall Hammer and are mentioned in a book written by Elmer Leroy Baker a biography for James Robert (Bob) Hutchins, The youngest U.S. Deputy Marshal to serve under Charles Issac Parker of Fort Smith, Arkansas., "Note" Elmer Leroy Baker was the grandson of John Henry & Martha McCallie and the son of Maude Mitchell McCallie & Thomas Kelly Baker.

John Henry died of pneumonia on January 15, 1899, two miles southeast of Hewitt, Indian Territory. He is buried at Bomar Point Cemetery near Wilson, Oklahoma. This cemetery was started by cowboys who came up the Chisholm Trail near there. He has a marker on his grave.

Martha lived with her son Thad when the 1900 Census was taken in Indian Territory and drew a widow's pension for herself and two children under the age of 16 years. They were John Roy. and George.

Sometime around statehood for Oklahoma in 1907, several members of the family including Martha moved to the Weleetka, Okfuskee County, Oklahoma area.

There have been conflicts among researchers as to who Martha's parents were.?

I do know from a letter I have that Martha had at least two brothers, One named Charlie who was a railroad engineer and was killed when the train he was driving wrecked., It also states he was a very large man and that he wore a dress like garment while driving the train because of the heat off of the boiler., It also states he was never married.

second brother was Will who moved to Texas somewhere around Bonham and became a rancher and likely still has relation there today.

Ethel Laura McCallie Lee, granddaughter of Martha said she recalls her grandmother and that everyone called her Big Granny., Once when they had a family reunion down on the banks of the North Canadian River about 1915 that Martha sit in a rocking chair under a shade tree and would tell stories to the family.
