Copied from data submitted by Paul Cox," Phillip Cox, son of Revolutionary War veteran Phillip Cox and Christiana Steele, was born July 20, 1800 in Harrison Co. VA. Phillip was a surveyor and a partner with his brother, Daniel V., in the first mercantile business in Bone Creek, which later became Auburn.
In 1847 he went to Harrisville and ran the Franklin Hotel until 1852, at which time he moved to Cox's Mills in Gilmer county where he died December 19, 1876. Phillip represented both Braxton and Lewis Counties in the Virginia General Assembly.
August 21, 1820, Phillip married Susannah Kniseley daughter of George Kniseldy and Anna Elb. Both Phillip and Susannah are buried in the Auburn Cemetery."

Margaret Moss of Gilmer Co., WV states, " As schoolmaster had 'Stonewall' Jackson as student - is reputed to have saved 'Stonewall' life by pulling him from the icy waters of West Fork River."

Phillip and Susannah had 10 children - George Kniseley; Mary Catherine; John Sutton; Isaac Newton; Elizabeth Ann; Phillip Clark; Oliver Perry; Daniel Wirt; Susan Josephine; Lodema Christiana.
