Death of W.H. Stephenson
Wm. H. Stephenson died last Tuesday morning, Jan. 27, 1903, at his home at the corner of Elm and Franklin streets. He had continued to have dangerous attacks, and to again rally from them. This morning he rallied very strongly, and to such an extent that he desired to dress, and did sit up on the side of the bed. Very soon thereafter, however, he was taken with another attack and at 7:30 expired.
The disease from which he died was dilitation or enlargement of the heart, with several complications, including a liver trouble. His sickness lasted about six weeks.
Mr. Stephenson was born in Ohio, Feb. 19, 1842, and his age at death was 60 years, 11 months and 8 days. In November, 1861 he enlisted in Company K of the 48th Indiana regiment, and served until July 25, 1865. He was a very faithful and efficient soldier, and though in many battles and skirmishes, and all through Sherman's march to the sea, was never wounded. Neither was he ever sick during the service. During the march to the sea he was detailed as one of his brigade's squad of foragers, a very dangerous and strenous duty, and at one time was captured by the enemy, but escaped the same day.
He was married to Miss Rebecca Payne, daughter of Capt. G.W. Payne,Dec. 20, 1868. She survives him, and also four children, two daughters and two sons, Mrs. Wm. Fry, of Rensselaer, Miss Jessie and Roy and Clarence Stephenson.
The funeral was held Thursday, at 10:30 a.m., at Trinity M. E. church, Rev. LaBounty, pastor of Rose Bud M.P. church, of which the deceased was a member, preaching the funeral sermon. Interment was made in Weston cemetery. Rensselaer Post No. 84, G.A.R. had charge of the services.
