Edith was one of 6 children born to her parents. After her father's death she lived with her mother until the mid-1930's when she moved to Denver. There she found work as a cashier and bookkeeper at the department store Montgomery Ward. Around 1936 she met Lem Stein, a widower and father of two children. Having never had children of her own, she was thrilled to be a step-mother to Nadine and Don. Don, however, wasn't as thrilled and challenged her at every turn, angry that he had lost his mother and not ready to accept another woman in his mother's place. Edith was a warm, kind and caring woman, though, and kept on killing him with kindness. While Don was in the Navy during WWII Edith wrote to him nearly every other day, and Don grew to love her very much. When Nadine had her first child Edith was thrilled to be a grandmother and was very excited. She did her best to spoil her granddaughter, and her happiness doubled when she learned Nadine was pregnant with her second child. Unfortunately Edith developed breast cancer and the disease was advanced when it was found. She underwent a mastectomy, but it was too late, and she died soon after. Don spoke fondly of Edith up until his death in 2012.
