RALEIGH A. CURTIS, 85, of Midwest City, Oklahoma, passed away Monday, March 28, 2005 in Norman, Oklahoma.
Raleigh was born May 4, 1919 in Rush Springs, Oklahoma to Anna May Curtis and Thomas A. Curtis. He was raised in Rush Springs, Oklahoma and graduated from Sterling High School.
He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army for four years during World War II. He landed with the 7th Infantry Division the first day of the Philippine invasion. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
In 1942, Raleigh married Oleta Blades of Rush Springs in the chapel at Camp San Louis Obispo, California. Raleigh and Oleta made a home in Midwest City, Oklahoma in 1946.
Raleigh was employed at Tinker Field Air Force Base for 33 years until his retirement in 1974. During retirement years, Raleigh and Oleta traveled the country, spending many summers in the mountains and winters in south Texas. Along the way they made many friends and cherished those times. Raleigh enjoyed gardening, tinkering on cars, fishing, his dog Libby, and being with his family. He loved times when his grandchildren would come to Lake Eufaula and spend a few days fishing and sitting out by the fire. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren's school programs and ball games. Raleigh had a strong work ethic and tried to instill that in his children. He loved and was proud of his country.
Raleigh is survived by his wife of 62 years, Oleta; son, Philip Curtis; daughters, Jennifer Bentley, and Anita Ray and her husband Gerald. He will always be 'Gramps' to his seven grandchildren: Scott Bentley and his wife Debbie of Midwest City, Okla., Jeff Bentley and his wife Michele of Houston, Texas, Cescily, Amy, and Kerry Curtis of Midwest City, Katie and Zach Ray of Midwest City, and his five great-grandchildren: Rayna, Raegan, and Bryce Bentley of Midwest City, and Madison and Jordan Bentley of Houston, Texas, and sister Ann Curry of Midwest City. His parents, sister Grace Blades, sister Lelia Mae Schotts, and brother Aaron L. Curtis preceded him in death.
Dad you will truly be missed. Thank you for being such a great role model to all of us. You were a true 'Gentleman' and our hero.
Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 1st at First Baptist Church of Midwest City under the direction of Ford Funeral Service. Graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Rush Springs Cemetery.
