Matamoras Man Slain; Son-in-Law Held As Suspect
Clarence Barr, 44, of Matamoras Rt. 2 whose home was one-and-a-half miles north of Matamoras on State Rt. 7, was killed Monday at Beech Bottom, Brooke Co., W. Va. His son-in-law, Calvin Norman, 27, of Beech Bottom a steel worker, is charged with firing the shot which killed his father-in-law who went from Matamoras to Beech Bottom Sunday for a visit with relatives. When he arrived on the Norman premises and was nearing the house, Norman ordered the older man away. According to Brooke Co. authorities Norman then fired a shotgun which first tore away a part of the kitchen door and then entered Barr's chest. He fell dead and according to the county coroner, he was killed instantly. The body was taken to a funeral home in Wellsburg and from there was taken to the Corum funeral home at Matamoras.
According to Sheriff Richard Hogg of Brooke Co., it is reported that Norman told him there had been ill feeling between the father-in-law and son-in-law for some time.
Barr, who lived at Beech Bottom before moving to the Matamoras neighborhood, is reported to have gone to Beech Bottom Sunday to find his wife, who is reported to be in Pittsburgh, and from whom he is said to be estranged.
Norman is employed as a shearman in the Beech Grove plant of the Wheeling Steel Corp. Following the shooting he was placed in jail. He was released Tuesday under $1000 bail after the Grand Jury of Brooke Co. which was in session found an indictment on the charge of voluntary manslaughter.
Mr. Barr was born Nov. 10, 1906 at Matamoras and spent most of his life in that community. He is survived by his parents, Nathan and Bessie Clutter Barr of Matamoras; his widow; Anna Lusher Barr; and six sons and daughters.
