Charles P. Beatty, 80, of rural Auburn died at 8:35 p.m. Monday at Memorial Medical Center.
Born on Dec. 9, 1905, near Auburn, Mr. Beatty was the son of George Beatty, who died in 1948, and Amelia Lucinda Parmenter Beatty, who preceded him in death in 1971. He married Adella Jenkins in 1931 in Auburn.
A farmer, Mr. Beatty was active in all phases of farming economy. He was an active follower of all sports activities in the Auburn area. A 1924 graduate of Auburn High School, Mr. Beatty played on the football and basketball teams.
Mr. Beatty was a member of the Auburn Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Church Session and a chairman of the church building committee. He had served as secretary of the board of directors of Farmers' Elevator, Lowder, since 1948.
A 50-year member of the Sangamon County Farm Bureau, Mr. Beatty served six years on the Sangamon County Farm Bureau board of directors and two years as secretary. He served six years on the board of directors of the Bumgardner School in Talkington Township and 18 years on the Auburn School District 10 Board of Education, 12 of those years as board secretary.
He also served two terms on the University of Illinois Extension Council of Sangamon County and one term on the Sangamon County Zoning Board. Mr. Beatty also was a member of the American Polled Hereford Association of Kansas City, Auburn Sertoma Club, Auburn Rotary Club and Auburn Masonic Lodge Arch and Anchor 354.
Surviving are his wife, Adella; one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Jean) King of Auburn; one son, John A. Beatty of Waverly; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Auburn Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. David Bybee officiating. Burial will be in Waverly East Cemetery.
