She was raised in Durham, attended Southern High School and graduated in 1962. She retired from Duke University Medical Center with over 40 years of service. She was a member of the Gospel Center on Driver Ave. in Durham, now Grove Park Chapel. Phyllis was the caregiver for her mother, father, brother and two grandchildren for many years. She was blessed to be in her home at the time of death surrounded by her family. She was an avid Duke Basketball fan "Go Duke!".
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Perkins Howerton.
She is survived by her daughters, Lisa Howerton Gillotti of Durham, Kimberly Howerton Ammon and husband, Jim, of Morrisville; two brothers, Terry Ward and wife, Sue, Eddie Ward and wife, Carol, both of Reidsville; two grandsons, Scott Harris and Steven Gillotti, lovingly called her "Nan". She is deeply loved and will be missed by her family and extended family.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Ralph Clayton and Elder Ronald Lawrence. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
