Son of Charlie & "Nannie" Rachel (Harshbarger) Cochran, Murrel was born in Tennessee; moved to Iowa about 1923 and attended Oxford rural schools. He married Adelaide Svaboda June 25, 1936 in Dakota City. He was a lifetime livestock dealer and worked 26 years at the Iowa City Sales Company. In 1969 he and his son purchased the Oxford Sale Barn. He was still active in livestock at the time of his death.
He was a member of the Oxford United Methodist Church, the Loyal Order of the Moose in Iowa City, Oxford IOOF, Oxford Chamber of Commerce, Livestock Marketing Association, Johnson County Farm Bureau, Iowa Cattlemen's Association, the American Angus Association, and the Iowa Pony Pulling Association.
Survivors include his wife, a son Bob Cochran and his wife Judy of Oxford, two granddaughters: Chris Cochran of Providence, R. I. and Sandy Doyle and her husband P J of Coralville; two grandsons: Chuck Cochran and his wife Tammy of Oxford, and Tom Cochran and his wife Dawn, of Oxford; three great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
A daughter, Carol Jean, in 1963; 12 brothers and four sisters died earlier.
Services were held at the Oxford United Methodist Church and interment was in the Oxford Cemetery.
