Enlisted, April 17, 1916, in Troop C, Squadron A Cavalry, New York City. He mustered-in with Troop C, Squadron A Cavalry for service on the Mexican border, June 30, 1916. Squadron A Cavalry was assigned to Camp McAllen, Texas, with the 6th New York Division. While at the border he was in ill health, and hospitalized, September 5, 1916 . Returned to duty, September 20, 1916. He returned to New York with his Troop, December 23, 1916, and mustered-out of border service, December 28, 1916.

World War 1, attended, OTC, at Plattsburg Barracks, NY, commissioned, 1st Lieutenant Cavalry, August 15, 1917, and Captain, February 20, 1919. He deployed to Europe, September 8, 1917, Assigned to the General Staff Corps, AEF, December 14, 1917. He served in many important positions with the AEF, including Peace Conference July - October 1919. He was awarded for his service, the Distinguished Service Medal, France Legion of Honor, British Military Cross, Italian Order of the Crown. Discharged from the service, October 25, 1919.
