She was baptized at Thankful Baptist Church in Estill, SC and remained in Estill until she was 11. At that time, she joined her mother in Paterson, NJ and became a long-time member of St. Luke Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of the late Rev. Dr. A.M. Tyler and Rev. Kenneth D.R. Clayton. She attended St. Luke Baptist Church for 71 years and formerly participated on the Kitchen Committee.
Dorothy began her elementary school education in Estill, SC, and completed her education in the Paterson Public Schools. Thereafter, she went on to become an industrious, lifelong Paterson resident.
She was employed by Heller's Candy Company in Paterson, NJ. After many years of service, she changed professions and worked in the health care field until her retirement. She adored traveling to area resorts and spending time with her close friends Retha, Mattie, and Julia.
She also valued dining with her family and friends. She had a special gift of helping. If any of her family was in need, she was there to lend a hand. Dot had a beautiful singing voice that was likely not heard by ma who knew her, but she was not shy when it came to speaking her mind or keeping the peace between her beloved mother and sisters.
Dorothy Austin departed this life on March 19, 2013 at St. Joseph's Hospital after a long illness. She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Elizabeth Alston De Vore and Lois Alston and a brother, John Wesley Alston. She leaves us with a great legacy to mark her precious time on this earth. Those who lovingly cherish her memory are: two daughters, Dorothy Lavera Dudley and Robin Pickney both of Paterson. NJ, sons. Richard Pickney Jr. of Phoenix, AZ, Anthony Picknev of Hazelton, PA, and Gerald Glenn Pickney of Milan, Italy one sister, Frances Alston of Paterson, NJ; a brother Robert (Bobby) Austin of Newark. NJ; three grandchildren, Jervel Vann, Robin Picknev, and Makhi Simpson; two great-grandchildren, Jasmia Dailey and N'Dia Chambers: and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
