He was the son of a Baptist preacher; he and his family moved to Oregon when his father was pastoring a church in O'Dell, Oregon.
He met Cheryl Roark there and married her 10 AUG 1962 in Hood River, OR by Bishop Leroy Webster. The rest of his family had moved back to North Carolina.
He lived in Hood River, OR and had a view of Mount Hood from his back yard.
He was a logger/lumberjack and a Christian. He loved his family, loved Mount Hood, and loved the NC mountains.
He enjoyed Southern Gospel Music; one of his favorite songs was "The Rock of My Soul" and he would turn it up loud coming off the logging roads on his way home. Lyrics:
"Once I wondered in sin, so far from my home
Wayward and burdened, I walked all alone
Then at a meeting I heard Jesus say,
"Come to the altar, I'll save you today."
chorus:
The Rock of my soul, my Sword and my Shield
the Rock of my soul, praise God He is real!
There is one thing for sure, there is one thing I know
forever He'll be the Rock of my soul!
I struggled that night; no peace could I find
searching in vain to untangle my mind
the Spirit of God descended on me
breaking my chains and setting me free.
chorus
Sometimes in my life the devil tempts me
and He tells me that I was never set free
oh but I know for sure, I remember that hour
I was saved by God's grace and I'm kept by his power."
