Peggy Lou Johnson Honeycutt, age 87, went home to be with her Lord on March 16, 2013, at The Hospice of East Texas in Tyler after a brief illness.
Peggy was born on July 4, 1925, in Brownsboro to John R. and Eula Mae Johnson, who preceded her in death. She graduated from Gladewater High School in 1943. After graduation, Peggy sang and danced her way through World War II, entertaining the troops stationed at Camp Fannin in Tyler while serving with the USO.
In 1946, Peggy married Lee Mason Honeycutt. Lee and Peggy spent 47 wonderful years together ballroom dancing, traveling and camping throughout the U.S. and spending time with the Shriners of the Sharon Shrine Temple.
Peggy worked for the East Texas Chest Hospital (now The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler) and later served as post mistress in Big Sandy. After retiring, Peggy enjoyed volunteering with The Salvation Army Ladies Auxiliary and singing in her church choir. Peggy was best known for singing songs from the Big Band Era, dancing, and baking her "famous" chocolate pies. Her life motto was: "Keep a smile on your face and a song in your heart!"
Peggy was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, the same church in which she and Lee were married.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Mason Honeycutt; her brothers, Billy R. Johnson and John H. Johnson; and her sister, Bebe Walker. Peggy is survived by her children, Randy Honeycutt, of Houston, Penny Honeycutt, of Hawkins, Cindy Hooser and husband Brent, of Tyler, and Rusty Honeycutt, of Tyler, and Lee M. Honeycutt Jr. and Sandra Bonds, stepchildren. She is also survived by sister, Ethella McMinn, of Grandview; brother, Jim Johnson and wife Mary, of Frankston; 12 grandchildren, Brandi Honeycutt, of Hawkins, Ryan Honeycutt and wife Delinda, of Houston, Zoe Honeycutt, of Bloomington, Ind., Erin Hernandez and husband Markos, of Houston, Lindsey Cary and husband Heath, of McKinney, Zachary Honeycutt and wife Jordan, of Searcy, Ark., Mason Honeycutt, of Bullard, and Megan Hooser, of Austin; along with six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Peggy's nephews, Russell Walker, Alvin McMinn, Jimmy Johnson, Kent Gates, Kelly Wilson and Doss Rogers.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at Stewart Family Funeral Home. The service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2013, in the chapel at Stewart Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Todd Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in Chilton Cemetery in Big Sandy.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul Children's Foundation or The Salvation Army Ladies Auxiliary.
