Joseph Roberts was born in December 1812 at Redruth, Cornwall, England, son of Richard and Sarah (Michell) Roberts. He married Elizabeth Rogers on Oct. 25, 1834 at Illogan, Cornwall. He was a miner, like his father before him.
His first two sons were born in Illogan, and he brought his little family from Cornwall to America in 1840. He first settled in Lafayette County, Wisconsin, and around 1845 moved north to Ridgeway, Iowa County, Wisconsin.
Joseph Roberts was often elected to local public offices, being the Town Clerk in 1849 and 1852-55, Town Assessor in 1856; Town Chairman in 1859; and Town Clerk again 1861-63.
