CENTRAL CITY -- Howard Earl Ceder, 91, of Central City died at home Sunday, March 17, 2013.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Central City. Sister Mary Arie will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery, with military rites by American Legion Lone Tree Post 6 of Central City.
Mr. Ceder was born July 20, 1921, near Cedar Rapids to Earl and Ethel (Imus) Ceder.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice, on Nov. 20, 2012.
Survivors of the immediate family include three sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Joan Ceder of Central City, Larry and Nancy Ceder of Smith Center, Kan., and Vernon and Becky Ceder of Mundelein, Ill.; and two sisters, Barbara Rose Schneiderheinz of San Antonio, Texas, and Beverly Lorraine Schmer of Richardson, Texas.
Also left to cherish his memory are five grandchildren, Anthony Ceder, Faith Oberg, Melodie Carlin, Lori Klooz and Aaron Ceder, and 15 great-grandchildren.
Howard received his education in Boone County, in California and graduated from Genoa High School.
On July 29, 1940, Howard was united in marriage to Eunice I. Peterson in Fullerton.
They lived in California, where Howard worked for Goodyear Tire, until returning to Nebraska in 1942 to live in Central City. Howard drove a laundry route and worked at the ordnance plant in Grand Island until entering the U.S. Navy in 1944. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Howard worked for Safeway in Central City from 1946 until 1962, when he and Eunice opened Ceder Home Improvement Store. Howard was also a rural mail carrier. He and Eunice retired in 1982. They enjoyed spending their winters in Texas from 1984 through 2004.
Howard was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Central City and was a lifetime member of the American Legion Lone Tree Post 6. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, reading, and fixing anything that was broken.
Howard was also preceded in death by his grandson, Thomas Lee Ceder; his parents; and an infant brother.
