Alvin Marvin Smart died March 16, 2013 at a local hospital.

Al was born October 6, 1924 in Weyerhaueser, WI to Grant A. and Edith (Chapman) Smart. He and his twin sister (Alvina) had nine siblings. His family relocated to the Boise area when he was two years old.

Al earned his journeyman's carpenter status in the union while he and many of his family members worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot located in Hawthorne, NV during WWII. He also served for a brief time in the U.S. Army for which he received an honorary discharge.

Al was married for a short period during the late 40's during which his daughter Dora was born and he adopted his wife's daughter (Alice). After the divorce, Dora lived with her father and Alice remained with her mother.

Al met Virginia Schoen and they were married on October 19, 1951 in Valparaiso, Nebraska during a trip to meet Virginia's family. After their marriage, Al, Virginia, and Dora moved to Nevada where he again worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot when it was activated for the Korean War, after which they moved to Yerington, NV to work on the Anaconda Copper Mine construction.

In 1954 they returned to Boise, ID and Alice joined the family. This was also the year Al started his contracting business. He built homes and commercial buildings in the Boise area for which he gained a reputation for quality construction. Al built many custom homes for people who sought him out because of his reputation. Many of these individuals became the family's lifelong friends and extended family.

Al was a hard worker, but enjoyed taking time to go camping, fishing and hunting. He and Virginia made 8 trips to Alaska to go fishing and brought home their bounty to share with friends and family.

In 1985 Al began construction on their home in Cascade on Crown Point, with a view of the lake and West Mountain. This remained their main home until a few months prior to his death. He loved living in Cascade where he spent much of his retirement volunteering time, his carpenter skills, and sharing a daily cup of coffee with his friends. In the last few years he couldn't do heavy work so he would split boxes of kindling for anyone who needed it. During trips to Boise he would volunteer at Operation Love Center and would load up his truck or car with food to take up to Cascade for those who were in need.

Al is survived by his wife, Virginia; two daughters, Dora Noffke, of Wasilla, AK and Alice Van Dorn (Art Mills), of Meridian; six grandchildren, Bonita Eldeen-Silver, Nancy Louie-Wardel, Patricia Macgregor, Todd Van Dorn, Kerry Van Dorn and Jennifer Turpen; many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and one sister, Ethel Lemarr, of Roseburg, OR.

Services will be held at 2:00 pm, March 30, 2013 at the University Christian Church, 1801 University Dr., Boise, ID. Coffee and cookies will be served after the service.
There will be a memorial held in Cascade at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cascade Community Church, Cascade, ID., or your favorite charity .
