Orvetta Barnes was born on her father's birthday, March 29th, 1904, in Independence, Iowa. The daughter of Carl A. and Roscena Morse Wissler, she attended grade school in North Liberty, Iowa. Orvetta graduated from University High School, Iowa City, Iowa and has a BSC degree from the University of Iowa where she was a member of Hamlin Garland, Pi Omega Pi and Zeta Tau Alpha. She taught High School Business in Iowa, Nebraska and Illinois.

Orvetta married Fred Barnes on July 3,1935. He preceded her in death on June 4, 1991. They were the parents of two children: Ted and Joanne and have three grandsons.

She was a member of First Congregational Church, Decatur, Chapter CX P.E.O., GE-K Club, Women's Fellowship, South Side Country Club and Twinklers and former member of Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother.
