Born in London, England to William Thomas Peatling and wife Ann Carrington while they temporarily resided there - they were from Lincolnshire where most of his siblings were born. Arrived in USA New York on 7 July 1848 with father, step-mother, and siblings (mother deceased). Departed Liverpool, Traveled on The Forrest King. Became a US citizen in Scioto County, Ohio, after initially residing in Beaver Falls, Beaver Co., Pennsylvania. Married his step-mother's niece, Mary Ann Tyrrell, on 12 April 1855, in Scioto Co. Ohio. Mary Ann was born also in London and after being orphaned, was raised by her aunt and brought with the Peatling family to America (her aunt, Charlotte Tuke Peatling - 3rd wife of William T.).

With the start of the Civil War, Edward volunteered for 33rd Ohio Vol. Infantry in 1861, in Scioto Co. Ohio where he owned a farm. He fought in West Virginia, and later in October 1862 was killed on Chaplin Hill by bullet through the mouth during the Battle of Perryville, Ky. Removed to Nicholasville and buried at what became the National Cemetery there.

He and Mary Ann had four sons. His oldest son John could remember his father with the other Union soldiers marching away to War. His second son, William, could only remember when the telegram came telling of his death.
