On February 1, 1863, he enlisted as a private in Company D of the 33rd Texas Cavalry. In his Confederate Pension Application, Adams states that besides serving in the 33rd Texas Cavalry, he also served in the 1st Texas Cavalry. Upon examination of his claim, his service in the 1st Texas Cavalry could not be verified.
