Son of Francis Marion & Virginia Caroline (Brown) Davis born September 4, 1874 in Willowdale Twp., Dickinson Co. KS, the 3rd of four children. Matt was raised mainly in the Willowdale area and attended the Willowdale, Buckeye and Pawnee Gap schools along with others. He married Laura Jane Hobbs on February 27, 1901 in Solomon, KS. Three children came into the home, Paul Alvin, Harold Ambrose and Vivian Elizabeth.

In 1911 they homesteaded in the sandhills in western Nebraska, about 25 miles SW of Mullen in Hooker Co., near the headwaters of the Dismal river. The house was located approximately at Latitude 41.88003 N, Longitude -101.38655 W. The homestead was 640 acres and lay in Sections 17 & 20, T22N, R35W and they received the patent, #624177, on April 9, 1918. While there, they lived in a sod house and raised cattle.

In 1921 they moved back to Kansas to Manhattan where they ran or lived in a boarding house at 412 N. 11th St., until at least 1924. Later they lived in the Wetmore and Circleville areas where they farmed. From 1927 to 1932 they owned on a 160 acre farm, about 4 1/2 miles south of Wetmore, being the SE 1/4, Section 35, T5S, R14E. They may have lost this farm in the depression. Laura died in 1938. From 1939 to 1946 Matt lived on an 80 acre farm, owned by his brother Rez Davis, on the E 1/2, SE 1/4, Section 17, T6S, R14E, about 1 1/2 miles northwest of Circleville, KS. From 1946, and in his latter years, Matt lived with family members in Bancroft and Woodlawn, due to his failing eye sight and poor health. He loved to paint, draw and take photographs. Matt died at the Sabetha hospital in Sabetha, KS on January 14, 1953 and was buried in Priaire Mound Cemetery near Soloman.

Matt was named for (his middle name) Rev. John R. Madison, a local Methodist minister and later a chaplain to the Kansas senate.

Funeral services were held at the Pilgrim Holiness church in Woodlawn Saturday morning for Henry Davis who passed away Jan. 14 at the Sabetha hospital. Mr. Davis came to Woodlawn last fall with his daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Bud Leatherman, and has made a large number of friends in the short time he lived here. He was almost blind but this did not discourage him. He was always cheerful and passed much time painting pictures for his friends and those who saw them marveled that he could draw and paint such beautiful pictures as he was so nearly blind. Mr. Davis had not been well for several months suffering from a heart ailment.
