Obituary-Augustus F. Kohl
Augustus Ferdinand Kohl was born in Prussia, Germany, October 15, 1838 and died at Dixon, Ill, October 5, 1925, having attained the age of 86 years, 11 months and 20 days. He was married March 22, 1862 to Caroline Bettin, and to them 12 children were born, six sons and six daughters. One son and one daughter died in infancy. The others all grew to maturity and of these the youngest son and youngest daughter have preceded to the echoless shore as has also the wife of his youth, passing out of this life nine years ago, after 54 years of wedded life.
In the spring of 1884 Mr. and Mrs. Kohl with their 10 children broke the moorings of the fatherland and came to America, the land of promise. They settled at Franklin Grove and there reared their family and made their home until nine years ago when Mrs. Kohl passed to the great beyond and Mr. Kohl came to Dixon to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. A. Nelson at 821 Jackson avenue, where the end came.
He was a man of great activity and a wonderful constitution. He was of strong convictions but of few words. He was an ardent Christian and passionately devoted to his church. He served nearly 30 years as an elder in the Evangelical Lutheran Church at Franklin Grove. The Bible was his constant companion. He leaves to mourn his loss four sons and four daughters besides 49 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren, also other relatives and friends. His children to the fourth generation rise up to call him blessed. The large circle of friends, won by many years of quiet residence, testify to his integrity.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday morning at the home of Mrs. Nelson by Rev. L.W. Walter with interment in the family plot at Franklin Grove. The body was borne to its last resting place by six of his grandsons.
