Oliver A. McDonald was the son of Thomas Jefferson and Adeline (Steffy) McDonald.

He married Cassie Williams on May 17, 1921 in Athens Co., OH. They had at least two children:

- Charles Harold McDonald (1892-1958)
- William Harry McDonald (1893-1960)

Cassie died sometime between 1893-1897.

Oliver married Nancy Eleanor "Ella" Swett Enlow on October 4, 1897 in Athens Co., OH. As far as it is known, they did not have any children.
