In 1947, Mr. Sperber returned to his hometown with his wife and two young sons to build a permanent place to raise their family. After working in retail for 16 years, Harold and Connie purchased Chris Toggery Clothing and renamed it Herald's Men's Store.
Mr. Sperber served on the Sterling City Council for 8 years, in which time the recreation center, library, city hall, fire department, and wastewater treatment plant were built. Harold served on the Urban Renewal Authority and Downtown Development Corporation, and helped negotiate an agreement with Union Pacific Railroad to save the train depot and have it moved to its present location on Main Street Harold and Connie were members of Circle 8 Square Dance Club, and he traveled as a square dance caller. Mr. Sperber was a member of the Kiwanis Club and served as president. He was also a member of the Sterling Rotary Club. Harold and Connie were members of First English Lutheran church since 1947.
Harold dearly loved his family and enjoyed wonderful travels with them. He is survived by his sons Hal and wife Sue (Jewkes), Mike and wife Linda (Bicknell) all of Sterling, and daughter Helen and husband Bob Duncan of Crook; 10 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Mr. Sperber was preceded in death by his beloved wife Connie, his parents and 5 brothers, Clyde, Fred, Melvin, and twin baby brothers Floyd and Lloyd.
