He was a former employee of the Virginia Railway and retired after 34 years of service for the Norfolk and Southern Railroad. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Newport Masonic Lodge #261 of Newport, Virginia for 49 years. He was a member of Lakeland Chapter #74 O.E.S. of Narrows, and was a member of the Clover Hollow Christian Church in the community of his birth.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Richard Caldwell, L. Peck Caldwell, O.G. Caldwell and Clarence Caldwell; two sisters, Myrtle C. Guynn and Mary Helen Caldwell.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Givens Caldwell; a daughter and her husband, Barbara Jo and J.B. Buckland of Rich Creek; a son and his wife, George W.and Brenda Caldwell of Narrows; four grandchildren, Ann B. Borchelt andher husbnad, Dr. Bret Borchelt of Owings Mills, Md., Carrie A. Caldwell of Urbanna, Va., Jason B. Buckland, Rich Creek, Greg W. Caldwell of Narrows; and a brother-in-law, Earl Guynn of Rich Creek.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, July 25, 1997 inthe First Christian Church in Narrows with the Rev. Chris Michael officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. Friends may call at Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows Thursday after 3 p.m. Those who wish to meet the family to express their condolances of sympathy may do so at the funeral home Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. The family has suggested that those who are going to send memorials, please consider the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 3201 Brandon Ave., S.W., Roanoke, Va.
