NORTH WILKESBORO - Mr. William Fletcher "Bill" Absher, Jr., 68, of McElwee Street, Finley Park, died Thursday, October 15, 1998 at Duke Medical Center in Durham.
Mr. Absher was born May 26, 1930 in Iredell County to William Fletcher Absher, Sr. and Rachel Forester Absher Morris. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a graduate of the Chicago Institute of Insurance. He was a veteran of the Air Force serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in North Wilkesboro. Mr. Absher was President and Chairman of the Board of Sentinel Insurance Agency, Inc. He has been involved in the insurance business for 44 years.
Mr. Absher was very active in Wilkes County serving on the local Board of First Union National Bank, former commissioner for the town of North Wilkesboro, former trustee of Wilkes Regional Medical Center, former Chairman of the Wilkes County Democrat Party, former member of the N.C. Rail Council, former director of S.A.F.E. of Wilkes County and member of North Carolina State Tax Commission.
Surviving: wife, Linda McNeil Absher; sons, Christopher Clay Absher of North Wilkesboro, William Fletcher Absher, III of Virginia Beach, VA; daughters, Deborah Diane Price of Lewisville. Tracy Elizabeth Absher of Asheville; his mother of North Wilkesboro; four grandchil- dren.
Memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. today, October 17, 1998 at First United Methodist Church in North Wilkesboro with the Rev. Sydnor Thompson III officiating. Pri- vate interment will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park.
