Rev. E. C. Alexander
Edenton resident
The Rev. E. C. Alexander, age 103, of Edenton, died Monday, March 11, 2013 at his home. Born March 5, 1910 in Tyrrell County, he was a son of the late Charlie Wesley and Martha Owens Alexander. Rev. Alexander was the pastor of the First Christian Church in Edenton, for nearly 68 years. He began preaching in 1929 and only recently stepped aside when his health would no longer allow it. It was 1924 when Rev. Alexander accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior during a revival service at the newly organized First Christian Church. Becoming a preacher was never in his plans. He liked to say, "It was like the military, I got drafted. The Lord chose me. The people chose me." In 1929, at the age of 19, he was asked to become the Sunday school superintendent, then a deacon, and then an elder. In 1947, he became pastor. With no formal schooling for the job, he spent over two hours with members in a meeting room at the church while they asked him questions about the Bible before choosing him. "It was like a game show," he said. Preaching became just one of his many jobs. He worked the night shift at the Edenton Cotton Mill, sold and repaired Singer sewing machines during the day, and once owned and operated his own printing business, refinished furniture, and was a photographer. He initially served as First Christian's pastor free of charge, unless you count the chickens, eggs, vegetables, and other things from people's farms. "We were all poor and lived in company housing. I wouldn't dream of charging for my ministry," he said, "$200 a month is all I'll accept now." He liked to tell a story about walking home from the church one night carrying a bunch of chickens, "A police officer stopped me and accused me of stealing. I told him I didn't steal the chickens, it was my pay!" He left the cotton mill in 1983. He is survived by his daughter, Shirley Conner and her husband, Gary, of Williamsburg, Va.; two grandchildren, Stephen Conner and his wife, Jen, of Surry, Va., and Lacey Conner of West Point, Va.; two grandchildren, Ethan Conner and Emma Conner; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Eva Twiddy Alexander, who died March 22, 1988; a daughter, Minnie Lee Alexander, who died September 20, 1951; five sisters, Martha Ashley, Edith Owens, Cassie Downing, Mamie Holmes, and Violet Alexander; and four brothers, Sam Alexander, Charlie Alexander, Jesse Alexander, and Alton Alexander. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday March 15, 2013 in the Chapel of The Mulkey Funeral Home. The Rev. Thomas Biggs and Rev. Steve Davenport will officiate. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at The Mulkey Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to Albemarle Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27909, or to the First Christian Church, in care of Joyce Lassiter, 421 Mexico Road, Edenton, NC 27932. The family would also like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Rev. Alexander's caregivers, Joyce Lassiter, Christine Beasley, Sue Britt, Deborah Sanford, Melody Overton, Tracy Chappell, Linda Eure, Barbara Bunch, Dorothy Harris; and the nurses and staff of Albemarle Home Health and Hospice, Brandi Jordan, Sherry Piontka, Heather Holsapple, Gloria Rountree, Grace Wood, and Bethany Thompson.
