Jay Abbott was one of twelve children born to Rev. Wilburn T. & Louisa Alexander Abbott, in Oconee County, SC.

He graduated from the Southern School of Embalming in Columbia, SC in 1912 and worked for the McCormick & Van Meter Funeral Home in that city.

In 1920 he moved to Liberty, SC and opened Abbott's Music Store, and later added a furniture store and funeral home business (Abbott Funeral Home) which he operated in Liberty until his retirement in 1956. He then sold his business to Robinson Funeral Home, who operated it under that name in Liberty for a number of years before closing that location.

He also owned Abbott Cemetery, both the small property at the bottom of the hill adjacent to West View Cemetery (and over time has become known as part of West View, but still listed as being owned by the Abbotts) and the larger Abbott Cemetery across the road, which began burials about 1943 and is now owned by O.S. Galloway.

He was a member of Liberty First Baptist Church and was a Mason and life member of the Eastern Star.

Mr. Abbott had been in failing health for a number of years when he died at the age of 70 on October 13, 1959.

Surviving him at the time of his death were his wife, Mrs. Beulah Elrod Abbott, a son, J.M. Abbott, Jr. of Liberty; four brothers, James S. Abbott of Walhalla, D.S. Abbott Sr. of Seneca, Rev. H.T. Abbott, Sr. of Springfield, (Mo); and B.B. Abbott of Seneca; three sisters, Mrs. Sallie Cox of Wahalla, Mrs. Sam (Mertie) Isbell and Miss Annie Abbott of Seneca.

His funeral service was held Wednesday, October 14, 1959 at the Robinson Funeral
Home of Liberty, conducted by the Rev.
Harry Lee Thomas.
