Hugh Brownlow was born October 7, 1874 in Zion township and was the son of James and Letitia Speer. Hugh moved to Hanover in 1877 with his parents. He married Ellen Augusta Moore on June 19, 1902 and three sons were born to this union: James R., Hugh Brownlow, and Wallace Hamilton. Hugh was a Presbyterian minster and served in churches in such towns as: Sunbeam, Illinois; Dovina Center, New York; Omaha, Nebraska; Pittsburgh and Erie, Pennsylvania. The Reverend Speer served as a chaplain during World War I. His last church was in Sugar Tree Grove, Illinois. After he retired in 1950 he returned to live in Hanover. The Reverend Speer died September 21, 1961 at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City where he had been a patient for four months. The Reverend Speer is buried in Log Church Cemetery
