In his attestation paper in 1916 Oswald said his mother, Mrs. Fannie Linden of Boston, Mass. was his next of kin.

In the 1901 Canada Census, clerk Oswald MacGowan, 34, born September 3, 1866 in N.B., was living in Moncton, N.B. with Fannie, 24, born August 13, 1876; Mable, 11, born December 6, 1889; Ida, 4, born June 2, 1896; and Oswald, 3, born October 12, 1897, all born in N.B.

Oswald was the son of Oswald MacGowan and Fannie McClure.
