Herbert was the son of Dennis Blanchard Nowels and Millie O. Altimus Nowels. He and his wife had two daughters and four grandchildren at his death.
He was a resident of Huntington most of his life. He retired from American Hoist & Derrick in Fort Wayne after 27 years and had worked for the former Caswell Runyon in Huntington for many years. He was also a World War II Army veteran.
