Alfred Glover Clay was born in Ridgway,Elk County, Pennsylvania to Mr. & Mrs. Fletcher Clay. His mother was born Anne Charlotte Glover (1840-?) When Alfred was 3, his father died in the Civil War at the Battle of Fredericksburg, and in 1866 his mother married Courtney Mitchell O'Callaghan. In 1878, Alf graduated with honors from Erie High School in Erie, PA. and became an attorney. He lived and practiced in Philadelphia.
