He became involved in politics in 1928 when he was elected to the Democratic State Central Committee. In 1938 he was elected to the California State Assembly and in 1941, to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. In 1952 he was appointed Sheriff of San Francisco, a post he held until his sudden death of a heart attack at the age of 57.
