LtCol. Averill authored the book titled: "Mustang A Combat Marine" He was a Marine Paratrooper who was part of the 5th Division that landed on Iwo Jima in February 1945. More than a Iwo Jima book the Mustang covered three wars: WWII, the Korea War and the opening stages of the Viet Nam war in 1962. In Oct 1943, then 2ndLt. Averill served with the famous Second Parachute Battalion. In April 1944 he was assigned as Executive Officer, Hotel Company, 3rd Bn, 26th Marines , 5th Marine Division. In Korea on Oct 1951 then Major Averill, was assigned as S-3, for 2nd Bn., 5th Marines, 1Marine Division? He was Commanding Officer of 1st Recruit Training Battalion, MCRD San Diego from 1964 until 30 Nov 1965 following his subsequent retirement his career continued in the jungles of Vietnam fighting for the US. All throughout his career he maintained his capability to engage the enemy on all levels by staying steadfastly in sound physical health. Morning 14-mile runs was his norm followed by 1-mile swims for lunch. His awards were many including the Silver Star with combat V. LtCol Averill married Helen F. Carpenter on 31 May 1942 in Limerick, Maine. They are survived by one Son. Marine Corps Serial Number 016736.
