Enlisted on 6/1/1863 at Machodoc, Westmoreland County, VA., he was mustered into Captain William D. Brown's Company, Andrews' Battalion, Light Artillery as a Corporal. (This company subsequently became 4th Maryland Light Artillery.)
Killed In Action in the 2nd Battle of Fredericksburg, Va.

The 4th Artillery Company [also called Chesapeake Battery] was organized at Richmond, Virginia, during the spring of 1862.
