He was the son of Henry James and Nancy Sarah (Gilliam) Barnes and married Julia Kansas "Cannie" Hughey - 18 Nov 1880 - Lincoln Co., Tennessee. His obituary follows:
Mr. Joe H. Barnes died of consumption in Fayetteville on Tuesday, January 21, 1913. He had been in failing health for some time and realizing the end was near, waited with resignation the summons. His constant endeavor was to do right and mistakes he made were of the hand and not of the heart. Praise to his ashes.
