Deceased Name: Gertrude E. Adams

Gertrude E. Adams, 92, of Davis Road, Volant, died the morning of Oct. 24, 2003, in her home.

Born Aug. 11, 1911, in Scott Township, she was a daughter of the late James Gilfillan and Alice McConnell McKissick. She married Clyde N. Adams on March 21, 1940. He died June 13, 1972.

Mrs. Adams was a former elementary schoolteacher, having taught grades one through eight at one-room schools in the Lawrence County area, including the Fox School at Rose Point and the Enon Valley School.

She was active in quilt-making all her life and loved her flower garden.

She was a member of Plain Grove Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday school for more than 50 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Alice Ruth Clapper of New Castle and Esther LaMotte of Greenville; three sons, J. Lawrence Adams of Volant, Paul Adams of Lawton, Okla., and Lloyd Adams of Volant; two brothers, James R. McKissick of Pulaski and R. Wendell McKissick of New Castle; 27 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandchild; a son, Dale; a daughter, Mary Eaton; a brother, Clifford; and a sister, Dorothea.

Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. tomorrow at the Smith Funeral Home, Leesburg, 1778 Perry Highway, Volant. A service will be conducted at 5 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home with Ifron Hughes of Hillcrest Presbyterian Church of America officiating. Burial will be in North Plain Grove Cemetery in Plain Grove Township.
