There's an interesting bit of history about Julien Sidney Devereux, Jr.'s name: His birth name was Sidney Way, but on January 1, 1852 the Texas State Legislature approved an act changing the names of "Antoinette Scott and Sidney Way" to "Antoinette Devereux and Sidney Devereux." Section 2 of the act declared them "capable in law of inheriting the property of their father, Julien S. Devereux, in the same manner as if they had been born in lawful wedlock."
Both Antoinette and Sidney Devereux are listed as living with Julian S. Devereux in Rusk County, Texas in the 1850 US Census.
Julien S. Devereux served in the United States Civil War as a Confederate private in the 1st Regiment, Texas Calvary, 1st Mounted Rifles, Company H.
Julien S. Devereux married Martha V. Hoard on May 25, 1862 in Rusk County, Texas. They had one daughter, Ella M. Devereux.
Julien must have divorced Martha sometime after Ella was born, because Martha V. Devereaux married Elisha W. Bagley on May 20, 1867 in Nacogdoches County, Texas. In the 1870 US Census for Kaufman, Texas, Ella M. Devereux, age 6 years, is listed as living with Elisha W. and Martha Bagley.
Note: The historical committee for the McKnight Cemetery has found that J. S. Devereux was buried there because the Angelina River was flooded at the time and his remains could not reach grave at Glenfawn Cemetery, where his father and siblings are buried. (submitted by Danny Ray)
