Carlos Tracy was a leader in the Red Shirts. He was a brilliant intellect.

Walterboro, July 30 - C C Tracey, one of the most prominent attorneys in Walterboro, died here Friday. Mr Tracey was buried Saturday at Live Oak cemetery in the presence of a large crowd of friends. Funeral services were conducted at the Episcopal Church of which Mr Tracey was a member by his pastor, the Rev Mr Schroeter. Mr Tracey is survived by his sister, Mrs Bartless, and two daughters, Mrs Joseph W Lucas and Miss Susie Tracey. Mr Tracey was a man of many remarkable attainments and broad viewpoint.

Mr Tracey was born at Grahamville in 1856. He received his early education at the high school in Winnsboro and his college education at Washington and Lee where he graduated in 1873 when only 17 years of age. he read law with his uncle, Col Carlos Tracey, of Walterboro and was admitted to the bar in 1875, being at that time the youngest man ever admitted to the practice in South Carolina, a special act of the legislature enabling him to practice before reaching the age of 21. As captain of a military company here he went through the stirring days of 1876 with great credit to himself. He was elected intendant of the town of Walterboro in 1880 and was appointed county superintendent of education in 1885 to fill an unexpired term, being reelected in 1886 to the same position. He was a member of the board of registration from 1894 to 1902.

Mr Tracey stood in the front ranks of his profession, was a man of wide public interests and always stood for those things which were right and honorable. He retired from the practice several years ago on account of ill health.
