1st Lieutenant Roger Harvey Clapp was a pilot in the 96th Aero Squadron during WWI. This Squadron was the first in the United Air Service to have bombardment as its sole mission. The Squadron was based at Amanty, France. Clapp was assigned to the Squadron on June 4, 1918, and piloted several bombing raids in a Breguet 14 bomber. 1st Lieutenant Clapp and his observer were killed in an accident on July 6, 1918, when the airplane Clapp was flying stalled over the airdrome and burst into flames as it crashed to the ground.

Salt Lake, July 26 - Press Dispatches from Paris bore the news last night of the death in action of Lieutenant Roger Harvey Clapp, son of Knight L. Clapp, 235 South Second East street. The young Salt Laker was a member of the American flying corps in France. No details accompanied the announcement of his death.
Lieutenant Clapp had been a member of the Lafayette escadrille before joining the American army. He was 26 years old and had lived in Salt Lake ten years, coming here from New York, where he received his education. No official confirmation had been received by his relatives here today.
