Bono was the youngest of 11 children born to Luigi Dell'Era and Giusippina Galbiati.

His brothers Mansueto, Angelo, Plinio, Reno, Libro, Butch, and Ben, and sisters Louisa and Maria, all preceded him in death.

The love of his life, Letty Helberg, preceded him in death on July 6, 2011. They were married for 65 years and had four children; two sons and two daughters; four grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

Bono played professional baseball until WWII interrupted his position as catcher for the San Francisco Seals. He served in The US Navy in Okinawa as a gunman and mine sweeper.
