Lyman was a brother of the Washington Alpha chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity at (then) State College of Washington (now Washington State University).

Records show that he enlisted in APR 1917, and retired in JUL 1938. In 1940, Lyman was recalled, and he was released from active duty in JUN 1946. Brother Passmore's service number was O-745. Given the practice of placing an "O"at the beginning of service numbers assigned to officers, and the lack of any record of a second service number for Lyman, it is likely he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, USMC in 1917.
