Jesse was the third youngest son in the Wilber and Mary Jane Smith Thompson family of Clinton County, Michigan. He had four brothers and six sisters. Many of the family moved to Arkansas - Newell, who settled in Otwell and later moved to Geary County, Kansas; Charles, who located in Jonesboro; Jesse; Anna (Colister) who moved to care for Charles and died in Jonesboro, but was buried in Michigan with Hiram Colister, her husband; and Emma Adelia (Clise), who is buried in Oaklawn Cemetery. Anna and Adelia probably came to Arkansas together. Jesse married Nellie E. Wells on Dec 2, 1904. She was the daughter of Frank H. and Jennie A. Judd Wells of Hampton, Rock Island, New York.

Although headstone reads "1876", his birth is recorded in Michigan Births and Christenings Index as being on March 6, 1873.
