Simon Barton came to a sad end; his body was found floating in the Allegheny River near Oil City, Pa, on 20 April 1921 after he had gone missing early in the morning of 26 March. Simon had been in ill health for some time due to a degenerative nerve condition, and it was thought by some that he had become despondent over his condition and taken his own life. Simon's Hebrew tombstone inscription states his death date as 18/19 Apr 1921; most likely, he died shortly after he went missing (as noted above, the morning of 26 March), so his death death in this memorial is listed simply as Mar 1921. Simon's birthday in the extant genealogical records ranges from 15 Jan 1876 (WWI draft registration) to 1 April 1879 (his death certificate.) His tombstone states his birth year as 1878, which is listed in this memorial.

Simon and Harry Barton (Find A Grave memorial #106294964) are brothers, as described in an Oil-City-Derrick newspaper article in the 20 April 1921 edition. The Hebrew inscriptions on both their tombstones, as well as the one on the tombstone of Bessie (nee Barton) Gordon (Find A Grave memorial #106291185), identify the Hebrew given name of the father of each of these three persons as Naftali Hertz. This observation suggests that Bessie is a sibling of Harry and Simon.
