Elizabeth *Bessie* (Gillespie). Born Jan. 3 1897 and died Feb. 17 1997 at United Hospital after a short illness of virile pneumonia. Bessie had a wonderful 100th birthday celebration in January. She resided at her home at 435 Country Road 'E' in Shoreview prior to moving to Essling's Scemoc Hills Residence in Nov. 1995. She is survived by her sister and brother in-law Marge and Leonard Sommer, sister in-law Irene Gillespie; many nieces; newphews; grand nieces & newphews; & step grandchildren. Sje was preceded in death by her parents John & Catherine Gillespie; husband George Kurkowski; step daughter Cecilia Dege; sisters Mary Wilson, Catherine Keller, Sarah *Sadie* Hagerty Kenny, Esther Gillespie; brothers John T. Gillespie, Austin Gillespie, Michael Gillespie, Stephen Gillespie, Joseph Gillespie & John H. Gillespie. Bessie attened St. Joseph's Academy and was a longtime member of St. Odilia Catholic Church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 46 years; currently Unit 168. Bessie was President of the Abe Lincoln Unit and past 4th District President. She was involved in the early organziation of Girls State. For more than 17 years Bessie was a dedicated volunteer and hospital deputy at Veterans Hospital. Visitation Thurs., Feb. 20 at Roseville Memorial Chapel from 4-9 PM. Auxiliary Ritual at 7 PM. Burial Rite at 8 PM. Funeral Mass Fri. Feb 21, 10:30 am. St. Odilia Catholic Church, Shoreview with a visitation at 9:30 am. Luncheon immediately following Mass in the church courtyard. Mendota Heights after luncheon. Memorials to the Sister of St. Joseph's Bethany Convent Retirement Home.
