He married Helen Whicker and enjoyed 53 years together, and loved his family starting with his three children, their spouses and grandchildren: David and Joann, Jason and Kyle; Linda and Robert, Adam and Emily; Darryl and Rhoda, Corey, wife Joslin and son, Axel.
Melvin graduated with an Associate of Arts degree from Coffeyville Community College, and began working in the contraction business in Wichita, Kansas. After the passing of his father, Melvin returned to Coffeyville to care for his mother.
Melvin soon became partners in a very successful metal building company called Adams/Good Construction. After the company was dissolved, Melvin relocated his business near the farm where he grew up and continued until he retired at the age of 55.
Upon retirement Melvin lived in Longview, [Texas], and later Weatherford, Texas, before relocating to Kiefer, Oklahoma.
