Hazel Esther (Ervin) Abbott was born Sept. 30, 1897, in Coulterville, Illinois to James and Agnes (Miller) Ervin. She had two brothers and one sister who preceded her in death.

She married Dr. Talbert W. Abbott in 1930. (He was a retired dean of the college of liberal arts and sciences at SIUC. He died in 1974.) They had one son, Frank Abbott, and one daughter, Ellen (Abbott) Kelley as well as seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren at the time of her death.

Mrs. Abbott was a homemaker and had also worked at SIUC. She was a member of the Carbondale Women's Club, the SIU Faculty Club and the First Presbyterian Church.

She died on Friday, March 12, 1993, in Rosewood Care Center in Joliet, Illinois.
