Katharine Macwithey Dunton died on Sunday, March 3, 2013, at her home, "Verville", in Merry Point, Virginia, surrounded by family. She fought a courageous battle with ovarian cancer for nearly five years. She was 70 years old.

Katharine, known as Kathy, was born in West Orange, New Jersey, on April 12, 1942, as the eldest daughter of James Linen Macwithey and Katharine Dickinson Macwithey. After graduating from the Beard School and Bennett College, she worked with Life Magazine in New York City, where she met her future husband, Ammon G. Dunton, Jr. Returning to Ammon's roots, they moved from New York to Virginia in 1967 after discovering an eighteenth century historic landmark called "Verville", soon to be known as home.

Kathy had an infectious love of life and found great happiness in simple things. She enjoyed the country life and could often be found in her garden, tending to her sheep, or walking with her golden retriever. She treasured the view of the sun setting over the Corrotoman River. A gifted and spirited athlete, Kathy played competitive tennis for many years at Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club. She grew up spending her summers on Lake George in the Adirondack mountains, where she enthusiastically returned every summer with her own family. She and her husband, often accompanied by their children, also enjoyed travel to Europe and more distant places like Australia, New Zealand and Africa. These family trips helped establish close bonds of love, learning, and respect, which have endured to this day.

Kathy was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church and served on the boards of several local organizations, including the Rappahannock Foundation for the Arts, the Foundation for Rappahannock Westminster Canterbury, the Center for the Arts, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), and Lancaster Community Library. She was also a member of the Junior League of Richmond, Daughters of the American Revolution and The Garden Club of the Northern Neck.

Kathy was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her loving husband, Ammon, of 47 years; her three daughters and their husbands, Katharine Dunton Moore and P. William Moore III of Staunton; Mary Blair Dunton Zakaib and Charles A. Zakaib of Charlottesville; Elizabeth Dickinson Dunton Faison and Lane E. Faison of Charlotte; her son, James Linen Dunton of Charlottesville; and her sister, Linda Macwithey Baldwin of Diggs. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Katharine Holt Moore, Anna Caperton Moore, Gabriel Dunton Zakaib, Isabella Blair Zakaib, Lane Elias Faison, Jr. and Blair Winters Faison. Beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, she will be deeply missed by us all.

Funeral services will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Kilmarnock, Virginia at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 8, followed by a private interment at "Verville". The family will receive friends at Currie Funeral Home from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. A celebration of her life will be held at "Verville" in the spring, for which the date and time will be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Grace Trust, c/o Grace Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 1059, Kilmarnock, Virginia 22482.
