He was born August 18, 1930 in Galesburg, the son of Lorenzo D. and Mary E. Miller Patterson. He married Mary J. Cooley on May 26, 1956 in Galesburg. She survives.
Also surviving is a son, Gary (and Bill Redfern) Patterson, Galesburg, 3 daughters, Linda (and Tom) Tinkham in Texas, Lorrie Rader in Montana, and Leslie (and Paul Hunter) Patterson in Florida, 7 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 2 brothers, Donald Patterson, Tampa, FL and Ronald (and Marge) Patterson, Galesburg, 4 sisters, Joanne (and Jack) Sloan, Matherville, IL, Marilyn (and Rick) Jarvis, Gladstone, IL, Shirley Damewood, Monmouth, IL, and Chris (and Monte) Hogan, Galesburg, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Paula J. Patterson on January 17, 2006, and a great granddaughter, Esther Joy Norick.
He was a self employed building contractor for 38 years. He was responsible for building many homes and apartment buildings in and around Galesburg. He retired in 2004.
He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1951. He lived his entire life in Galesburg and was a winter resident of Florida since 1998.
He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the Fr. Joseph Hunt Council 556 Knights of Columbus, and Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285, all in Galesburg. He was an avid golfer.
He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War. He was a Corporal.
Funeral Mass will be 10 AM Monday in Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. The Rev. Ernest Pizzamiglio will officiate. Visitation will be 5 to 7 PM Sunday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery with military rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285.
