Captain Berendzen served with the 768th Bomb Squadron, 462nd Strategic Air Wing at Larson Air Force Base, Moses Lake, Washington. During a nighttime, low level navigational training flight to test ground avoidance equipment aboard B-52D Stratofortress #55-0108, the bomber crashed, 60 miles south of Glasgow, Montana. The seven man crew died instantly when their aircraft disintegrated upon impact with a butte that was 300 feet higher than the intended flight path.
